If you want to make an impact on your children’s lives, teach them to cook. I’ve been surprised at how many people do not cook. They order take out or eat out. Only when you prepare your own food do you know what is in it. The extra salt, fat and sugar provided in take out and restaurants will not serve your health. Let’s get back to basics with cooking. Let your children help you cook, prepare vegetables and serve dinner. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Simple food is the best food. Family dinner is the time to share the love. Make mealtime healthy for the body and soul by sharing good food and good stories of your day! It will make your heart smile!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Welcome to 2016! May we be Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise!
We are deep into winter in Colorado and that means dry skin. Be careful in your choice of skin products because they go into your body. I have a bottle of olive oil in my shower. After I shower with soap, I step away from the water and put a little olive oil in my hand and rub it all over my body. Then I step back into the water and let any extra oil be rinsed off. It feels great. CAUTION: be careful not to slip if you drop any oil on the floor of the shower.
Avoiding Fungus!
Manicures and pedicures are very popular and I have to say, they make my hands and feet feel better. There are risks and if you know me, you know I will do almost anything to avoid fungus. And there have been bad cases of fungus reported from having a manicure or pedicure in a spa that was not using proper cleaning products. There are some establishments I have left because I can’t stand the chemical smell. I like the ones that are so well ventilated that I don’t have to smell the acrylic nails and the smells from the polish. I also make certain they are using sanitary products and keep their basins clean. Older people may have a more difficult time keeping their toes and toenails healthy. Note: great gift idea!
High Heels!
One of the problems with women wearing high heels is it causes dropped metatarsals. That is where the bone coming down to the toes, falls. Just by looking at a woman’s foot in a high heel, the mechanics are obvious. I believe I have read that even Oprah says she uses high heels just for photos. Why? Because they hurt and especially as we get older. And yes, they are so cute! I tell the young girls to enjoy them because there will come a day when they can’t do that anymore. Maybe they can do it, but they will FEEL the wisdom of choosing more comfortable shoes. Our feet need to last a lifetime, so be judicious with your shoes! And after a night of wearing high heels, give your feet a nice, good foot rub!
Keep Your Tendons Healthy!
Did you know that a common reaction to taking certain antibiotics is that a tendon in your body will degenerate? Normally it is the Achilles tendon, but it can be other tendons. I’ve had patients experience this and it is no fun. That is another reason I love the nutritional approach I use in my practice so I can keep from talking antibiotics and help other people avoid them too. The last antibiotic I took was in 1980. I’m not saying I won’t ever take one, but as long as I can clear the infection with nutritional products, why would I want the side effects of the antibiotics? It is well known they disturb the digestive tract by killing our good bacteria. The moral of the story: avoid them if you can!
Hello Holidays!
The holidays are upon us. Please remember as you gift older people that nothing is more important than health. If they hurt, maybe a bottle of lotion with arnica in it would be helpful. Throw in an essential oil. I love the muscle massager I have which makes it possible to massage your own body. A gift certificate for a massage would be something they can really appreciate. Rescue remedy for sleep would be a great stocking stuffer for those with difficult sleep on occasion. Or if you give them a basket, make it fresh fruit and nuts. Throw in a candle and they will love it. Let’s have a healthy holiday!
Happy Feet!
Do you have happy feet? When I think about all the work the feet do, the line that comes to mind is from Roger Dangerfield. “They get no respect!” They certainly don’t get the respect they deserve, that is until your feet hurt, and then they have your absolute attention. Then, and only then, do you experience just how important it is for your feet to be happy! Those little things (by comparison) support all of your weight and carry you from place to place. Never compromise footwear by wearing shoes that don’t fit properly. Show your feet some love and massage them! Get a bottle of water and push it back and forth on the floor with each foot. Then a pedicure (yes, you men too)! Ah…the feet are already feeling better.
Rest With Your Breath!
A word that describes our life these days is BUSY. Rest is in short supply and in can really show up in your health. It might hard to take a whole day off for rest and recuperation, but it is possible to take 10 minutes each day to breathe and allow your self to simply BE. Breathe deeply and feel the relaxation. These moments can be caught while you are waiting for your kids or standing in line at the grocery store. Obviously, it would feel better if you were in a chair by the fireplace, but your time waiting is spent anyway, so let’s use it to support better health. And yes, plan that relaxing get-away where you can recharge!!
It Will Go Away!!
When people hurt, the most common thoughts are, “it will go away.” And sometimes it does go away. That is why it gets confusing. Sometimes it will go away without any intervention at all and sometimes it doesn’t. The body compensates for all the things we do the best it can, but at some point, it can’t compensate anymore and we have pain. That is why maintenance care is so popular. You come in once a month or once every six weeks and get adjusted so the nervous system is capable of compensating once again. You keep changing the line in the sand of how much your body can compensate and that will keep you, outside of trauma, asymptomatic. Schedule your chiropractic appointment.
Emotions and Pain!
A patient was in my office with terrible back pain. I adjusted her. I worked her muscles. I did reflex points. I used my laser. I really needed to get her out of pain because she had an event to attend. But nothing I did seemed to help. And then I thought, maybe I should check for something emotional. I found, through using NET, there was an emotional element related to her back pain. It cleared, she stood up and the pain was all gone. Sometimes our pain isn’t relieved by what we thought would relieve it. Dr. Candace Pert, who wrote The Molecules of Emotion, once said that when she started researching emotions, she thought emotions were all in the brain. It wasn’t long into her research she realized, emotions are all over the body!
